Researchers have reviewed the studies conducted with Black American couples to determine if they benefited from marriage to the same degree as White Americans(Blackman, Clayton, Glenn, Malone-Colon, & Roberts).
Although marriage increased money and decreased poverty for Black Americans, and made couples more likely to be content and have better family relationships, it did not indicate that physical health improved for Black couples who were married.
Here’s what research found. In terms of family life and physical health among black couples:
1. Black males profited from marriage more than Black women.
2. Male children in Black families, in particular, benefited greatly from having married parents.
3. Black women who were married reported worse health than Black women who were single.
4. When black women were married, it didn’t improve the standard of their family life in any way.
So why do Black men appear to enjoy greater health and family life quality than Black women?
I looked at numerous relationships, including mine, to answer this question, and I came to the conclusion that Black males are no longer able to effectively support themselves because of a number of factors, like wage differentials. They are looking for black women who can help support them as a result. Black women now carry the bulk of the financial load, enabling black men to live better lifestyles, even at the expense of their health researchers “women are more likely to experience stress in Black marriages than in White couples. As a result, this conflict and burden has a negative impact on Black women’s health and family life”
